After their adventures in China and Germany, the Kidd family is ready for some rest and relaxation. He falls in love with a young woman, Sarah; though they are separated by circumstance, Moishe's wanderings are motivated as much by their connection as by his quest for loot and freedom. Moishe eventually becomes a pirate and seeks revenge on the Spanish while seeking the ultimate booty: the Fountain of Youth.

This outstanding New Face of Fiction is filled with Jewish takes on classic pirate tales--fights, prison escapes, and exploits on the high seas--but it's also a tender love story, between Moishe and Sarah, and between Aaron and his "shoulder," Moishe. Rich with puns, colourful language, post-colonial satire and Kabbalistic hijinks, Yiddish for Pirates is also a compelling examination of mortality, memory, identity and persecution from one of this country's most talented writers.

Reviews Rated 3 out of 5 by Maya from Pretty good story I had to read this book for school, and honestly it was pretty good. The language was a bit hard to follow at times but that was the point since it was a told from a parrot, and b pirate speak. So I think that was actually a good part of it. The story was pretty great and I didn't find it very hard to read : Date published: Rated 3 out of 5 by Abigail from Interesting but sometimes difficult to understand I was really excited about the premise of this book being that the story would be told from a parrot's point of view , and for the most part it delivered, but I often felt that the story was bogged down by the use of Yiddish as a device.
I thought I would enjoy it more being a Jewish person myself, but I found that I had to look a lot of words up while reading which really pulled me out of the story. However, if you are looking for something that touches on the Jewish experience from a unique source a parrot and are also interested in the Spanish Inquisition, this could be a good choice for you! Date published: Rated 3 out of 5 by Kent from Just ok Generally the story is a fun read, but I had to stop and continually reference the Yiddish to understand the reference and the jokes. The last part of the book is an obvious rewrite of Treasure Island.
There is lots of humour but I think some of the jokes were forced and did not really advance the storyline. You might like it though Date published: Rated 5 out of 5 by Kyle from Incredible!
One of the most entertaining reads of the year for me. Playful use of the Yiddish language is the real star here. Rated 5 out of 5 by BookWorm93 from Fantastic! A surprisingly deep and fun read.
